Your plumbing system has to take in every drop of water, piece of food, strand of hair, and ounce of grease that falls down your drain. It’s no wonder we don’t think about the integrity of our sewer system until it starts causing problems that back it up. To help you diagnose a problem with your drain pipes, we have created a list of the most common causes of sewer backups. Call us today to learn more about our maintenance services and how they can benefit your sewer system.
Clogged pipes are one of the most commonly witnessed causes of residential sewer backups. You may be able to locate clumped-up toilet paper, hair, soap, grease, and other substances near the drain entrance that you can remove yourself. If your drains are continuously clogged in your kitchen and bathroom, this is a sign of a problem with your main sewer line. You can prevent a clog and sewer backup by throwing wipes, grease, and food in the trash instead of down the drain.
Although you are responsible for fixing problems with the sewer pipes on your property, your local city or suburb is responsible for the main sewer pipes beneath the road. The main sewer lines are responsible for transporting wastewater out of your home and your neighbors homes. If a main sewer pipe gets clogged, your local municipality will be in charge of getting that fixed.
Are the drains in your house clogged? We offer fast and reliable sewer line repair and replacement services to homes in areas of Illinois such as Plainfield, Bolingbrook, Wheaton, Downers Grove, and Aurora. Our technicians will perform an inspection to confirm the blockage originates in the sewer pipes on your property. If the source of the problem is a main sewer line, we will help you contact your local city to restore the flow of water in your house.
Your property’s sewer system is located near the surface of your lawn. Therefore, as the roots of the trees in your yard or the neighboring area spread, they can grow into your sewer pipes to damage or clog them. Do not attempt to remove or repair a sewer line without a licensed technician.
In older homes, sewer pipes during the initial installation were made from clay tile, cast iron, Orangeburg, and other materials that become susceptible to cracking and collapse with age. Our experts are trained to perform small and large sewer line replacements to help you avoid backups from broken pipes filtrating into your home. Don’t let sewer blockages disrupt your day. Reach out to us now for immediate assistance.
Not every sewer pipe is made the same! The pipe materials usually seen in homes are clay tile (VCP), cast iron, orangeburg (bituminized fiber), and plastic (PVC). Clay tile, or vitrified clay pipe, is a ceramic pipe made from clay and shale. It’s resistant to most sewage for a long lifespan but is vulnerable to tree root punctures. Although clay tile (VCP) pipes are durable, the hubbed fittings do not reliably seal water. Once the fittings start to leak water, it is not uncommon for tree roots to invade the clay pipes.
Cast iron pipes are durable enough to protect against tree roots, water leakage, and some earthquakes. However, this type of pipe can rust and corrode over time. On the other hand, Orangeburg (bituminized fiber) pipe material is made from pressing wood pulp and pitch. It’s an easy, lightweight installation, but the brittleness is an issue that calls for complete sewer pipe replacement. Meanwhile, Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) pipes are widely used because they’re simple to put together, light, and durable. In fact, PVC failures are usually due to improper installation and planning rather than anything else. Our team of licensed plumbers in Naperville, IL offer credible repair and replacement services for sewer pipes assembled with clay vile (VCP), Orangeburg, PVC, clay sewer pipe repair and cast iron. and cast iron.
In areas where residences are spaced closely-together: each house runs sewage to the main sewer line. This sewage or wastewater is then pushed by gravity through increasingly larger pipes until it reaches the (typically downhill) wastewater treatment facility. In places where gravity alone cannot push the wastewater, a grinder-pump or lift station is used.
Varying from plant to plant, this water is treated through one or more stages. Primary treatment allows solids to be screened out of the water for disposal or burning. Next, the water is either chlorinated to kill the remaining bacteria or put through a secondary treatment where aerated tanks allow bacteria to eat the leftover organic matter. After this, the water is put through a settling tank so the bacteria can disperse out. This process removes 90% of the wastewater’s solids and organic material. During tertiary treatment, phosphorus and nitrogen are removed using chemicals, filter beds, and/or other water treatment options. Finally, chlorine is added as a last-step bacterial cleanse and the water is cycled back out ready for usage.

Stephens plumbing is fair and reasonable. They came out quickly and did the job for less than half the cost Jay's Plumbing wanted. Additionally, their products are far more fairly priced. Where Jay's wanted five times the cost for a garbage disposal sold at Home Depot, Stephens was only $50 more. And they were happy to let me buy it from Home Depot and still install it. Don installed it and rodded out my drain in less time than was originally suggested, saving me on labor. He was also able to fix a couple of things that needed to be done at that time. Thanks, Stephens! I will be calling on you in the future.
